About the maps on MRT.SG

The maps used on MRT.SG are generally created from open public data.

For the main geographic map, OpenStreetMap(OSM) data was used to construct the coastline and MRT/LRT track lines :- Credit and copyright to OpenStreetMap contributors. The data is available under the Open Database Licence.

MRT/LRT station positions are by MRT.SG and put in the public domain (attribution not necessary but appreciated). Currently, MRT.SG uses a point to represent each physical station (as identified by a name). Taking an example, Bugis station, an interchange station, has two station codes (EW12,DT14) which represent the two parts of the station that are served by two different MRT lines (the East-West Line and Downtown Line). The station is big enough to have two geographical location points for each part of the station of each line. However, for simplicity, they are represented by the whole physical station (Bugis) and only one location point is used.

At this time, the station data has not been contributed to the OpenStreetMap project database (as OSM already has its own station data) and thus might differ slightly from OSM's data.

Why use these maps and not Google Maps ?

MRT.SG is designed to be lightweight(data-wise). Browsing full maps (such as Google's) is data intensive and thus not favourable for mobile users. The biggest MRT.SG map is 422kB (225kB for Chrome browsers due to the more efficient webp format). Location data (for stations) is just tens of kB. Styling code and scripts add up to hundreds of kB but with long-term caching, these are one-off data costs.

Note though that most MRT.SG maps do not contain details such as roads and buildings. For such details, Google Maps or other full maps are still necessary. MRT.SG is working to add more detailed geodata while finding ways to maintain the simplicity of the user-interfaces and keep data loading light.
